As part of Underwater Odyssey Rescue’s (UOR) Clear Vision for a Clean Planet (Clean Planet Initiative), the Make-A-Wave Coastal Clean-up has been created to fight against the vast amount of pollution along our shores today. The Clear Vision for a Clean Planet’s purpose is to support Underwater Odyssey Rescue’s commitment to provide Educational Programs to students, from K-12, and beyond. Make-A-Wave is UOR's very first Education Program.
Make-A-Wave will be focused on promoting volunteerism through local communities and our Future Leaders Student Volunteer Program. These volunteers will have the opportunity to learn valuable social skills while taking part in fun and educationally focused shoreline clean-ups. UOR hopes to establish and grow the Make-A-Wave Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships for students following a particular educational course.
Each of the 8-10 Regional Make-A-Wave events each year will be focused on gathering local communities to clean up beaches and coastal shorelines. The first region will be the Tampa Bay Area Wave, which will include the counties of Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Manatee. As the program grows more regions will be added to The Wave. The next being; Sarasota, DeSoto, Charolette and Lee counties. Underwater Odyssey Rescue will coordinate with local schools, businesses, governments, and communities to get volunteers to critical areas where we will work to make a difference in our marine eco-system.
It is Underwater Odyssey Rescue's goal to raise, through donation and sponsorship dollars, at least $5000 additional dollars per event. Of that first $5000 in donations/sponsorships, 100% will be reinvested to form the Make-A-Wave Scholarship Fund. Raised funds from $5001 and up will be split, with at least 78% reinvested into Underwater Odyssey Rescue Programs, and at most 22% towards overhead. With the amount being invested back to UOR programs growing, as UOR grows, and becoming stable in the mid-, to upper-80%.
UOR will establish a Make-A-Wave Beautification Fund, from which money will be reinvested into beautifying the beaches and coastlines with conservation in mind. Items such as bicycle racks, pump stations, recycling and garbage receptacles, solar-powered bus stops, etc, will be funded by Underwater Odyssey Rescue.
We are 100% volunteer organization and currently are building our mission and brand through grassroots efforts of our Key Volunteers. Because of this project’s focus on education Make-A-Wave Coastal Clean-ups will be 100% sponsor and donation driven, promotional items available at Make-A-Wave events will be free or sold at cost.
